How does HomeRoom determine the users in the system?

When you install HomeRoom, you tell it where the shared directory location is on your network.

It assumes that your directory is structured thus:

The program will automatically read this structure, and show the classes. When a class is selected, the students in that class are displayed, so the students can find their name and select themselves.

What does HomeRoom save for each user?

HomeRoom changes the "My Documents" directory for each user when they log in, and also, stores the most recently activated documents. It also saves the visual settings for the user, including color scheme, and accessibility settings.

HomeRoom does not save the desktop--all users are currently assumed to share the same common desktop. In a multi-user environment, most programs should be stored in the Common Desktop directory in any case.

Why doesn't my background restore itself correctly?

Setting the desktop background with Internet Explorer will usually create a file on your local computer, rather than on a shared location. When you go to another computer, your background will not be available.

To solve this problem, it is better to right click on the image you want as a background, and save it into your My Documents folder instead. Then, use the desktop settings and browse for the new image.

Why doesn't HomeRoom require the users to set a password?

We considered this for quite some time, and decided that the extra administration required would make this undesirable. However if we have overwhelming user repsonses from registered customers telling us otherwise, we will gladly reconsider this position.

Why doesn't HomeRoom start after I install it and restart my computer?

If you are running Ad-Aware it may be because you are blocking access to the registry. You need to allow registry changes because HomeRoom needs to modify the startup section of the registry. You can find more details on the Ad-Aware support forums.
